Teaching RE and Worldviews in Early Years to ensure Strong Foundations
In Reception class, children encounter Christianity and other faiths as part of their growing sense of self, their own community and their place within it. There are opportunities to encounter Christian, Hindu and Islamic worldviews, as well as non-religious responses and ways of living.
Within the Early Years Curriculum, there is often cross-over between the different subjects. The following Early Learning Goals relate to the discrete subject of Religious Education and are taken from Knowledge and Understanding of the World:
People, Culture and Communities:
Children at the expected level of development will:
- Describe their immediate environment using knowledge from observation, discussion, stories, non-fiction texts and maps;
- Know some similarities and differences between different religious and cultural communities in this country, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class;
- Explain some similarities and differences between life in this country and life in other countries, drawing on knowledge from stories, non-fiction texts and – when appropriate – maps.
Religious Education and Worldviews in KS1 and KS2
Through the teaching of Religious Education and Worldviews, we hope all our children are educated to develop spiritually, emotionally, educationally and morally. This will enable them to understand themselves and others, and to cope with the opportunities, challenges and responsibilities of living in such a diverse world.
At Moreton Morrell, we believe that an understanding of the world’s major religions helps our children to understand the world in which they live. We believe that through understanding religious practices and beliefs, we can promote our values of Compassion, Forgiveness and Service.
Our RE curriculum is designed to explore a range of faiths to gain a deep understanding of religion and how it shapes people’s lives. Through exploring religious stories and rituals, we develop our children’s insight into how others see the world and the religious values which may underpin their daily lives. By exploring similarities and differences, we also highlight connections and commonalities which unite us as well as differences which enrich our community.
Religious education at Moreton Morrell C of E Primary School is taught to enrich the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of all pupils, whether or not they are from a religious tradition. Through our teaching of RE and Worldviews, we strive to encourage our children to become open-minded, curious and respectful citizens who understand and value the beliefs of others.
