It is our aim that pupils will develop a love of reading that lasts a lifetime. With this in mind, we teach the children from entry into Reception how to decode the written word efficiently using their phonic knowledge. We place great importance on the teaching of phonics and use the scheme Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, which is approved by the Department for Education. This scheme is used throughout the school to teach phonics and all staff have been trained using six training modules, available year-round, on-demand. This level of Continued Professional Development  is essential to support the effective delivery of Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised throughout the school, ensuring that every child becomes a competent reader, with a lifelong love for reading

Children who need additional support to help with their reading and writing are given focused intervention work, in small groups. This support continues into Key Stage 2.
