All children, including within our Pre-school, are taught Maths daily which includes opportunities for developing their Maths knowledge and understanding of how Maths is used in everyday life.
Within EYFS and KS1, children study the NCETM Maths Mastery Mastering Number programme. This aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future.
We follow White Rose Maths Small Steps and teachers apply this sequence of learning using resources which best meet the needs of cohorts. Teachers are trained in Maths Mastery and use the principles of this within their planning and lesson delivery. The children are taught about numbers and the number system and use this knowledge to a variety of developing calculation strategies. They learn about shape, space and measures and how to collect and interpret mathematical data. We aim to ensure that maths teaching is active using a wide range of resources and relating their learning to real-life situations. Creative opportunities to use maths are also included within other areas of the curriculum such as Science and Design and Technology.
