All children are taught English daily which includes opportunities for reading, writing, speaking and listening, phonics and spelling. Grammar and punctuation is also taught across all of these strands. The children are taught phonics and spelling using the recommended synthetic phonics approach through the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised scheme, which has been approved by the Department for Education. Children are taught to read using complementary books which are full decodable, encouraging a passion for reading.
Creative opportunities to write and develop language are also incorporated into all areas of the curriculum. Daily lessons provide lots of opportunities to write for a purpose and an audience in mind, so that tasks are meaningful and exciting. Children enjoy opportunities to be involved in drama activities within class and in school productions. The enjoyment of this subject is further promoted by annual visits to the theatre, World Book Day, author visits to the school, book fairs and storytellers.
